China Again - Is China Dangerous For Cachers?

     A couple of my kids travel to China for business.  My son recently started caching with his family.  When I saw a post about the dangers of geocaching in China, it caught my eye.

     Just so you can see a bit about what may be a huge problem, I have copies just the front page of forum.  You can see where my worries come from.

     My first thought is - who approves the caches in China.  Do they take safty into consideration?  Is caching that much different there?  I am hoping to find more info and perhaps get some response from geocachers who have traveled and cached in China.   You can be sure that I will do an update as I learn more.

     

    

And Then There's TB Vehicles

     Penni wasn't just thinking about the dogs when she booked this location.  The Reid Park location of Queens' TB Rods and Dogs Meet and Greet was perfect for the cars and trucks too.  Parking was right at the event site so no need to walk a mile carrying food and chairs.  And large spaces for those trucks, a few caches close by - again, what more could a cacher ask for?

If a cacher wondered by, and was not aware of the event, they would have just by the cars.  So many TB vehicles!  Neat.

And if there was a contest for the cutest little TB vehicle or the absolutely most obvious TB vehicle, then there is only one choice for a winner.

Congrats Dale!  But one question here - how do you take your kids anywhere with you? 

 

Happy July 4th !

     Hey Cachers - how are you spending your July 4th?  So many post that I have seen on Facebook were from cachers who are taking advantage of this extra day off, in the middle of the week, to get out there and cache.  Here in Arizona, the high temps in central and southern Arizona have gone from the triple digits to way below seasonal averages.  Actually, more than 20 degrees cooler.  Perfect for getting out in the deserts and mountains and adding to that cache count.

Did they know, 10 years ago while they were eating their Happy Meals, what the future will hold? Did those 75 people that got together for an event on the banks of the Ohio River in Louisville, Kentucky have even a smidgen of an idea of what they started? Fast forward 10 years to 2012. GEOWOODSTOCK X!! Now a mega event, Geowoodstock attracts people from all over the United States and the world! Eight of these people have been to every Geowoodstock since the beginning! They are known as the "Elite Eight".

Finally! May 26, 2012. GEOWOODSTOCK X! As we drove up to the park, members of the special olympics were there directing us in which way to go to park. We made a donation and continued to our parking spot. It was still early, so we were fairly close to the front. We made our way toward the event area and when the field opened up in front of us, we saw the Geowoodstock X sign up on the hill! It was awesome and it was like looking at the Hollywood sign.

 Tents were set up everywhere for learning events, vendors and games. We didn't know where to start first. We toured the vendors first and made sure to visit the Boy Scouts and their tent to purchase water. Beyond the vendors, there was a area with sidewalk chalk set out. Everyone was signing the sidewalk with their caching names. How fun! We wanted to check out the big Geowoodstock X sign, so started making our way over. Along the way, we came upon the "LOG". A giant wooden 3 dimensional X, so we made our mark. There were many great wooden cutouts displayed all around the grounds, making for fun photo opportunities. 

Opening ceremonies began with a barber shop quartet singing the national anthem and the Boy Scouts presenting the United States flag. After the opening ceremonies, we walked around some more checking out what they had to offer. We played a few games of "Pluck a Duck" where you chose 3 ducks out of a pool of 100, hoping to pick one of the 5 numbers that were previously written down. The prize was a pathtag. I won one in the morning and my daughter won in the afternoon. We also played a game called "Pitch a Cache" where you had to toss 2 lock n' locks into a hole not much bigger than the cache itself. The prize for this game was a compass, and my daughter, Lil' Tumbleweed won this game also. Oh, and did I mention there was a WEDDING at Geowoodstock X this year? Yeppers, there sure was! Signal gave away the bride and the ceremony was beautiful. If you were lucky, you got to meet 

 Jeremy Irish and have your photo taken with him. If you were REALLY REALLY lucky, you got a Jeremy travel tag! We were really really lucky. We got to meet him and get the travel tag! There were many other "famous" cachers there, including the Podcachers and Clayjar. Clayjar invented the rating system used by Geocaching.com to rate the difficulty of the cache. If you have never had a chance to listen to the Podcachers, you can check them out at www.Podcachers.com. You are in for a real treat! Lunch at Geowoodstock was a catered BBQ, offering BBQ brisket, grilled chicken, vegetarian and a kids lunch. We had a chance to volunteer here as meal ticket takers. Even Lil' Tumblweeed was allowed to help out. I have never seen so many hot and hungry cachers in all my life. Our alloted time went by very quickly and the next thing we knew, our replacements were there. We spend the afternoon walking around and talking with cachers and discovering travelbugs. Oh, and one big thing I forgot to mention....NO LITTER! The trashcans were full, but the grounds were clean! CACHERS ARE AWESOME PEOPLE Geowoodstock X was a blast and we can't wait until Geowoodstock XI! We already posted our intentions of attending and we hope to see YOU there !

GeoWoodstock Is Happening - Without Me

     I can't believe that I am not going to make it to GeoWoodstock this year.  I had so thought it would be perfect.  There's lots of family-in-laws that live there that I haven't seen in years and there are a couple of nieces just a couple hours away from this location also.  But alas - I will staying in the heat of Arizona.  And to make it all worse, my niece, SchnauzerQueen, is staying home also.  I was really counting on living this event thru her.  Oh well, maybe next year it will be closer or I will be better prepared.

Hello from the GeoWoodstock X Team

Wow! It is FINALLY time we can tell our geocaching friends that GeoWoodstock X will bring the event back to its roots. The 2012 event will be held on the Sunny Side of Louisville in Sellersburg, Indiana.
One would be hard-pressed to find another location as rich in GeoWoodstock history as the Louisville/Southern Indiana area. From the very first GeoWoodstock held in Louisville, area geocachers have always been a part of GeoWoodstock history.
From its inception, many of the area geocachers have followed GeoWoodstock across the nation year after year. Of the original 75 attendees, 24 are InKy (the Southern Indiana/Louisville KY geocaching group) members. Of the Elite Eight, those who have attended all GeoWoodstock events, four are InKy members.
Three of the four event organizers have attended many GeoWoodstock events and understand the enormous preparation and background work entailed in putting an event of this size together. Organizers have supported GeoWoodstock from its inception. Three were attendees at the first GeoWoodstock held in Louisville, Kentucky. Two have attended all past GeoWoodstock events. Another has attended seven GeoWoodstock events and managed on-site registration at the first GeoWoodstock I and VII. Our fourth member attended his first GeoWoodstock in Warren this year.
The GeoWoodstock X Team hit the road running as soon as we were awarded the bid. Plans are locked in place for venues, events, food and lots more. Follow us on Facebook for updates. We will be pushing out news a little at a time so check back often.
But, what is GeoWoodstock and what can you expect? GeoWoodstock is the world's largest geocaching event but most of all it is FUN! It is a laid back social event. It is an opportunity to meet cachers from your region and around the world. Rub elbows with new cachers, geocaching legends, extreme cachers, geocaching vendors, lackeys … well, you get the picture. Everyone will be converging on Sellersburg, Indiana to celebrate the 10 anniversary of GeoWoodstock.
Come celebrate the 10^th annual GeoWoodstock. Spend the day socializing or spend the week touring our fabulous region. It's all up to you. 

   
     I love the fact that Sellersburg, Indiana is welcoming the cachers.  When I read this restaurant's menu, my mouth watered and I almost
changed my mind about making the trip.  Can you believe - it is so different in the Midwest.   I believe we should credit to those who support the cachers.

Since I have never been to GeoWoodstock, all I can do is show you a bit from the past events.  After this event, I will bring you a story or two from fellow cachers who were lucky enough to attend.
