Is Everything Bigger In Texas? Like Mosquitoes? Or the Scary Caches Too?

I'm a bit obsessed with these haunted caches.  Or many just excited.  I talked to a few caching friends today and told each that I really want to plan a trip that will concentrate on graveyard and haunted caches.  Much to my delight, they all agreed to make a plan.  Now to make it happen.

We have all heard that things are BIGGER in Texas.  Right?  I wonder if that holds true with haunted caches. I began to research this and am not disappointed.  Check these out.

Ghosts Of Texas--Bonin Cemetery  GC4CCRE - by bubberdad was established in May of this year.

Here's how bubberdad describes his cache.

This cemetery is located in north part of Spring off Goesling Rd. It is a private cemetery that has No Trespassing sign near entrance.

Most names we see around this area are German, but this cemetery is from a French family, that came to Texas from Louisiana The Bonin family came from Louisiana to North Harris County, Texas in 1852 with 52 other French families. This area is known for the German settlers but there was also a large French settlement with last names like Bonin (Boney, Bonet, Bonnin, Bony), Pevateaux, LeLeux, Melancon, Boudreaux, Sellers.

To this point, it seems to be a nice, quiet cemetery, free of hauntings.  But, this cache is pretty young still.  I'll keep an eye on this one.

Another cemetery but this one has a music star in resident is -

It appears that there are a number of sitings at this location but I am not finding any by cachers.  What are these spirits afraid of?  What's so scary about geocachers?

Well, here's the description of this cache -

This cache is in a series called "Haunted Lubbock" modeled after the Haunted Amarillo series. These caches are placed at supposedly "haunted" places in the Lubbock area. Want some creepy night caches? Try these.

Established in 1892, the Lubbock Cemetery is said to be one of the largest burial sites in Texas with more than 60,000 graves. Paranormal researchers with the T.P.R.S. refer to the Lubbock Cemetery as "very" haunted. The Lubbock Cemetery is home to numerous shadow people, orbs and the most well-known apparition - the glowing man, described as a human torch-type of figure who wanders the graveyard.

The gates of the cemetery close at sundown and it is in a questionable part of town.

DO NOT GO AFTER THIS CACHE AT NIGHT!

This is an easy park and grab, but please be respectful. Also be sure to stop by the grave of Buddy Holly while you're here.

Here's one with an erie story from the past.  Personally, I would want to do this one at night, just because you can.  Check out the info about Heman's Sporting Goods - GC10VX7 -

Geocache Description:

This is a series of 12 caches throughout East Dallas County. All of the caches are either: 1. actually haunted or 2. An Urban Legend. I put this series out because I do believe in haunted places and ghosts and find it very interesting. I have done some research on these places and have found multiple sites talking about them. If you would like to try these caches during night, please be careful. I will not be held liable for any damage or any other behavior that goes on. If you have heard any stories, had any experience, or know that some of my information is wrong, please e-mail me. All pictures are welcome and if you take some, look for ghost related objects in your pictures.

When it was Herman's sporting goods in the late 80's an ex employee was let in after hours where he killed almost every one in the store. People who have worked in there after that say they hear boxes moving, people laughing and then dead silence.

I just got an e-mail from Surrender The Booty's better half and she sent me a link to a picture. You have to check it out. Joseph Roland Lave.

 Yep - Herman's has possibilities.

Sad stories sometimes make for the scariest locations.  This one definitely qualifies as a sad location, combined with the fact that it is about kids - I could see how their spirits could linger, play jokes and be down right annoying.  GC10VX2 Suicide High (Garland High School) would be a cache that could give you goose bumps if visiting at night.  From the description, the yard sounds pretty safe, but if the kids come out to play, it could be an entirely different story. Check out toyota 4x405 description.

Lakeview Centennial High School - Ever since it was opened in the 1970's, it was always considered the "bad" school. Over the years, it was given the name of "Suicide High". It was given this name because sometime in the late 70's a boy shot himself in the bathroom. Later on in the 80's a girl broke the mirror and slit her throat, a two girls found her. To this day, there are still no mirrors in the girl’s bathrooms (that I know of). Many students that attended Lakeview in the mid 90's committed suicide. In the bathrooms, sometimes you can hear footsteps when nobody else is in there. There are no windows in the school, and because of that, some students say that is why the rooms are so cold, and some say if feels like a prison. Students say there are cold spots in some places, and some say you can hear voices in the bathrooms.

In Amarillo Texas, York Tire - GC12QFQ - may just win the prize for haunted cache. There's a bit of a story to go with this location and some cachers get the heebie jeebies.  Captain&Crew pick a really good location but I wonder about the size.  When it comes to geocaching, size does matter, and this one if a mini-mirco.  You know the kind.  When you have to use tweezers to get that tiny little log out and can only sign your initials, if you are lucky.  Anyway, it sounds like it is a fun cache and even some who would generally pass it by because of it's size, enjoyed it.  So sit down with your coffee and read a bit about this cache.

Check out this description and see if you think you are brave enough to spend a little time with the elevator repair man.

Montie Townsend, the store's assistant manager, said he first encountered the ghosts after he went to work for the company almost five years ago. "When I first came to work here, we'd unload a truck and stack the tires in the back. The next day, the stack would be knocked over," Townsend said. "... Finally, I spoke to them and told them to quit knocking over the tires or else. They didn't do it again." Townsend said almost all of the company's 15 employees have had some sort of an encounter, from hearing footsteps behind them to seeing shadows move out of the corners of their eyes. "One day, I saw a person walking by, counting his change. He was wearing a gray uniform like the Westinghouse elevator repair people used to wear. ... He walked into the break room like he was going to get a Coke, and I went to see if he needed any help finding anything," Townsend said. "But nobody was there." The three-story building was constructed in the 1920s, and Townsend knows of at least one death inside its walls - an elevator repairman who fell down the length of the elevator shaft. "At one point, I think they brought in some people to check the building out, and they said there were several presences here, seven or eight different entities. I thought, ‘Pshaw, right.' But then, I saw the guy with the change." Amarillo Globe-News 2005

Just in case you are having doubts, here's a couple of cachers who had a bit to say about his cache -

bassangler1970 - Found it 07/13/2009   Wow! I was so close to giving up on this and luck was on my side as I placed my fingers on the right spot. I have actually purchased a tire here and visited with a man who claimed to have heard the noises and actually SEEN the ghost. What a cool and chilling story.

hiltonii - Found it Found it 06/19/2007   If I could have bolted right to this one, I could have had a picnic with it. I think the ghosts love making light of the situation. I kept watching the icon on my GPS float right past me. If it makes any difference to anyone the coords my GPS finally settled down on were N 35.12.140 W 101.49.698

cbrkgraham - Found it Found it 04/21/2013   Getting out of the car, my husband and I both got goose bumps. The York Tire building is creepy!!! Had no problem finding the cache... think we just got lucky though. Great hide!!! :)

Another East Dallas County cache sounds like it would be scary but not one of the cachers that I read on the log seemed to see the spirit of the 'Lady'.  Come on Texas.  Where's your adventure?  Not many night cachers?

toyota4x405 had this to day about GC10VXB - Lady of the Lake

Lady of the Lake or White Lady has been seen here and on the road by the lake - dressed in a 1920's evening gown and soaking wet - she asks drivers for a ride to a house on Gaston Ave where she disappears leaving nothing but a wet stain on the seat. The story is that she was the daughter of a wealthy family in the 1920's. She was on her way home from a ball when her car wrecked in the lake - she drowned, but the others lived.

Sometimes the best is saved for last.  I love the description of this cache and it is located in El Paso.  That would still be Texas but so close to New Mexico.  And to this point, New Mexico is still the scariest caching state.

GC2MBYP - Arkham Horror  Cemetery - (this is where I am speechless; a rare event) I will just let the words of sexyboo tell you about this cache.  And Yes! that is this cacher's name.  Even I could not make that one up.

Geocache Description: ”That is not dead which can eternal lie And with strange aeons even death may die.” – H.P. Lovecraft

Summary

Welcome to the world of HP Lovecraft, a strange and sinister place of blood curdling terror, madness-inducing creatures of the imagination and, of course, caches!

This series is based on the game Arkham Horror which in turn is based on the novels and short stories of pulp writer HP Lovecraft. In this series, you will play investigators following the trail of fellow investigator Harvey Redshirt McCauley, who was found murdered just prior to your investigations. HR left you a series of journal entries, photographs, and other clues that will help you find the pieces to the puzzle and in turn help you stave off the impending apocalypse.

Sit back and enjoy the ride. But be careful! Strange, other worldly denizens lie in wait for the unwary traveler; a wrong turn could lead to madness or death! Have fun!

Arkham & the Outer Realms

The original location for Lovecrafts stories was in and around the fictional town of Arkham, Massachusetts (loosely based on Salem). In addition, many of Lovecrafts stories also took place in wildly strange and sinister worlds outside of our own. To take the place of these locations, the city of El Paso, Texas & its surroundings will substitute for Arkham and its New Mexico neighbor to the north Las Cruces & its surroundings will substitute for the Outer Realms.

The Elder Sign

This arcane symbol is one of the view known items that will ward off the impending evils of the Outer Realms. As such, the final goal of this series is to locate the Elder Sign and thus save humanity from unspeakable terror and madness. But it will not be easy. While it is possible to find the Elder Sign without finding the other caches first, it will be next to impossible to access it without help from the other cache findings.

Things You Will Need

Since you are acting as an investigator as well as a geocacher, here are something of things that will prove useful during this series:
Tweezers! Some of the clues you will discover will require delicacy
Pen. Pencils may not write on the arcane surfaces
Gloves. Denizens of the dark may dwell with the clues
Journal. Like HR, you may need to write things down occasionally
Camera. Photographic evidence could help you find some of the clues
Flashlight. Where would a good investigator be without a flashlight?
Mirror. Some Things Should Not Be and you would not want to stick your hands on them
Patience. Do not try to rush through these. Proper investigation takes time
Diligence. Please place things back exactly as you found them for others to enjoy
Respect. When you find a clue, leave it in the cache for others to find
Allies. The more brains you have, the better. Mmmm... tasty, tasty brains...

That's it for Texas.  Now it is time to hunt down more haunted caches.  Maybe it is time to wander around the country to find the next ones.  Check back soon.
